Course Overview

Unlock the power of visual communication in this unique, hands-on studio art class designed specifically for middle school students. Hands are one of the most expressive tools we have, yet they are often considered the hardest thing to draw. In this course, you will conquer that challenge by merging the technical skills of figure drawing with the rich, expressive language of American Sign Language (ASL).

Students will explore how ASL uses handshapes, movement, and facial expressions to convey deep meaning. By combining realistic hand illustrations with symbolic artwork and visual narrative elements, you will create a final masterpiece: a powerful, stylized portfolio piece that tells a personal story without speaking a single word.

What You Will Learn

  • The Anatomy of a Hand: Break down complex hand structures into simple geometric shapes for accurate, confident drawing.
  • Shading and Form: Use value, highlights, and contour lines to make your hand drawings look…
The remainder of this sentence is cut off in the image.
  • ASL Fundamentals: Learn basic ASL vocabulary, the manual alphabet, and how the culture communicates stories through visual expressions.
  • Visual Symbolism: Discover how cultural symbols, color theory, and background elements can reinforce the message of your artwork.
  • Graphic Storytelling: Master the art of composition to guide a viewer’s eyes through your piece, blending hands and symbols seamlessly.
